Your Favorite Social Media Resources, Please!

I’m working with Michelle Honald at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio on a project and we need your help!

Whether you’re a professor, a student, an enthusiast or just a reader – we’d love to hear about your favorite resources for teaching or learning about social media. We are particularly interested in books, but any resources are welcome!

Professors: what are your favorite books? if you teach social media, what books do you assign?

Students: what resources have you found most helpful in learning social media (books, in particular, would be great to hear about)?

Enthusiasts: What’s on your bedside table? any favorite reads that have been particularly helpful?

Just leave your feedback in the comments. We’ll definitely share the results!

I am currently reading Groundswell by Charlene Li. I’m only part way through it but so far there are great explanations of social media, how people use it, what people use it and some great case studies. I’ll let you know when I am done with it but its great so far.

As a PR student, the best way I have found to learn about social media is to dive in and try it for yourself. I subscribe to more than 100 blogs as well, so I read a lot about social media and a lot of other random blogs. The random ones help you see what works and what doesn’t.

Its not a book, but it is a fantastic opportunity to learn and really absorb the ‘essence’ of social media. The Integrated Marketing Communication Conference put on by Federated Media is a seminar that is attended by a representative or CEO of every influencial social media outlet. Students can usually get in free if the express a desire to learn about social media. You can listen to the creators of Twitter, Facebook and many others explain the “essence” of social media and each outlets intended use and patterns for PR/Marketing success.

Oh my gosh – I LOVE reading πŸ™‚ I love Paul Gillin’s books; I thought they were the easiest to understand and the most comprehensive, and they give a really good overview on social media from a PR perspective. I’m reading his second now, and though the New Influencers was great, I think you could get by with just reading the most up-to-date second.

I also ditto Groundswell; it was the book that really paved the way for my career in social media. It provides a great formula for executing a good social media plan, and it highlights several really great case studies.

I also recently read ProBlogger (the book) to learn more about blogging, and I actually think it was a great read from a digital communications perspective as well. It really helped me understand the goals and objectives of bloggers, which I now think about when working with them.

I also am really into podcasts right now. I love On the Record Online, and have just started listening to DishyMix. I also read over 100+ blogs (when time allows!!) but books are definitely the way to go to develop a core understanding on the basic concepts. Here’s a good article on links to social media how to’s: http://www.interactiveinsightsgroup.com/blog1/100-resources-to-boost-your-social-media-savvy-top-tips-advice-from-the-experts/

    Hope this helps!
